General Questions

Is there any free parking on campus?
Open-air motorcycle and open-air bicycle parking is free. All other parking on both the Kelvin Grove and Gardens Point campuses attracts a fee of some sort.

Can I park on the holidays without a permit?
All parking on campus is regulated 24 hours per day, 7 days per week unless otherwise stated.  Please ensure that you read and follow the signage within the car park.

Where can I park on the weekend?
All Pay and Display parking on campus is regulated 24 hours per day, 7 days per week unless otherwise stated.  Full and half year weekend permits are available.  You may apply for these online (see above). When parking on campus at any time, please ensure that you read and follow the signage within the car park.

Where can a bus park?
Unfortunately neither Kelvin Grove nor Gardens Point has facilities for bus parking.  You will need to make alternative arrangements.  Brisbane City Council does have pick up and drop off bays available for bus parking.  Please contact the Brisbane City Council for further details.

Permit Questions

When will my application be looked at?
Parking applications are processed regularly.  The initial allocation of parking occurs on the weekend following the closing date for that period.  Subsequent allocations are then done every Friday during the period.  You can view the status of your application by looking at the day's section.  Each time block will display one of the following statuses:

Status Meaning
Pending the application is waiting to be assessed
Processed the application has been assessed but is waiting either for an allocation run or for spaces to become available
Offer   you have been offered parking
Declined you were declined parking
Cancelled you have cancelled your offer

How do I find out if I have been allocated parking?
If you are successful you will receive an email from a do_not_reply@qut.edu.au email address.  The initial offers for each semester are sent two weekends before the semester starts.  You should ensure that emails from this address are not treated as junk email.  The email will be sent to the email address you have given in the contact section. For staff your internal email address will be used if you have different addresses.

Why was my application declined?
Parking on campus is very limited, and there is insufficient space to provide parking to everyone who applies.  Applications are assessed according to need and parking spaces are allocated to those that demonstrate the greatest need.  If your application was declined, this doesn't mean that we think that you don’t need to park on campus, it is simply that the campus doesn't have enough spaces.  You should investigate what alternative options are available to you.

Can I appeal the decision?
Yes, If you feel that your application hasn't been assessed correctly you can appeal in writing to the Coordinator.  The Coordinator will independently assess your application, make a comparison with other applications for that campus and determine whether your application was assessed correctly.  If your application was not assessed correctly they will then determine whether you would have received parking if the correct assessment was made.  You will be advised of the outcome in writing.

You should be aware that only the information contained in your application at the time of the original assessment will be considered.  If you want to add information to your application, then you application will be reassessed and if this results in a different ranking, this will only be considered in future allocation runs.

What else can I do if I didn't get parking?
You will need to make alternative arrangements.  Some suggestions would be to consider public transport, park & ride options, public car parks, street parking etc.  The Parking Office can help you by advising on what alternatives may be available to you.

Can I submit a late application?
Yes, we continue to accept applications throughout each parking period (ie semester).  However you should be aware that we do allocate to fill the car park in the initial allocation run before the start of the period, and that your application will only be considered if spaces become available, ie someone cancels their parking.

Can I get a yearly permit?
Yearly permits are only available to persons who have pre approved parking.  Most applicants are required to apply for parking on a semester basis.  Apart from the need for the Parking Office to assess all applications evenly, it is unlikely that students and academic staff would require the same days and times in different semesters.   The costs for a full year permit (up to $3500.00) would also be prohibitive to most applicants.

I'm pregnant, can I get parking?
Being pregnant in its self is not a reason for gaining parking.  However we do recognise that some pregnancies are not as straight forward as others.  You can still submit an application detailing all the reasons why you require parking.  If your reasons are based on a medical condition you would be required to have your Doctor complete the mobility impairment form to support your application.  Please remember that this does not guarantee you will receive parking as this will depend on your individual circumstance. I'm pregnant, can I get parking?

My class was on a public holiday, can I use my permit for makeup days?
Your parking permit is specific to a particular day of the week and for a particular period of time.  In most cases the period for your permit does not include the make-up days and you are required to apply for them separately in the exam application.

What parking period should I apply for?
You may choose either just the teaching period (eg Semester 1, 2011), or the teaching period + exam + break period together (eg Sem 1 incl exam and break period 2011).  When you select a period, the dates of the period will appear below.

Whatever period you apply for you have to take the same days and times for the entire period and that the parking fees are all due up front.   Students and part time academic staff should apply for just the semester.  They can then apply for the exam period (where you can select individual dates and times) or the semester exam and break period  separately.  If you are a professional staff member or full time academic you may wish to apply for the semester + exam + break period.

You must apply separately for each campus, unless you are a Senior Staff (paid under the SSG award).  Once you have submitted the period, you will need to apply for your days and times.  The parking application system will give you an estimated cost for each time block you apply for.

I've lost my permit, how do I get a new one?
You will need to complete a Statutory Declaration stating that you have lost your permit.  Submit the completed declaration to the Parking Office and your permit will be reprinted.

How do I change my vehicle details?
You need to go back into your online application, navigate to the vehicle section and update the details of your vehicle.  Once the vehicle details are correct, either bring you current permit to the Parking Office, where your permit will be reprinted on the spot, or contact the Parking Office to arrange for your permit to be exchanged for the new one either at Kelvin Grove (Y1 block) or the Gatehouse (GP).

Can I get a refund if I cancel my permit part way through the period?
A pro rata refund is available for most permits.  Some permits have a flat fee charge and therefore a refund would not be given.  Your refund will be calculated from when the Parking Office receives your returned parking permit.  From June 2011, an $11.00 administration fee will apply to all refund applications.
