QUT does not have staff members whose duties include physically moving furniture. Injuries can easily occur if persons engage in the moving of furniture without training and equipment appropriate to the task.
Arrangements for the relocation or disposal of University furniture are the responsibility of the organisational area, or contact Paula Sorbello.
Relocating, Removal and Disposal of Unwanted Furniture
If the furniture is in good condition, Facilities Management can arrange for the furniture to be recycled to other areas within the University, to view https://sharepoint.qut.edu.au/divisions/das/fm/rc. Contact Paula Sorbello, Relocations Coordinator on extension 80121.
While you are welcome to use a company of your choice, QUT recommends the following three companies because of their familiarity with both campuses, and some offsite properties. The University has also had the opportunity to sight their insurance policies.

It is recommended that several quotes be obtained to ensure cost savings. Cost savings can also be achieved by combining a number of moves into one job. A self-subscription interest group has been established through QUT Virtual to enable you to contact other staff who are planning moves. The email address is qut.furniture_moves@qut.edu.au.
Should you only have a single item of damaged furniture that needs disposal, and can be transported without the need for a trolley or other special equipment, please contact the Cleaning Supervisor on the campus you are located to arrange a time for the item to be inspected. If it falls within the above parameters the Cleaning Supervisor will arrange for the item to be disposed of without cost.
For auction disposal of furniture, one approach is to use Queensland Purchasing Disposals. You will be asked if you are prepared to wait for the item to be collected during one of their routine collection runs as it will reduce the cartage cost considerably. If however you require the item to be disposed of quickly, and are prepared to pay for that convenience, you should specify early removal on the form available at their website. There is no preferred supplier for auctions and any can be used.
The following groups need to be informed when removalists are coming on site to avoid hold ups and conflicts with other events happening etc.
- Gardens Point campus - email the details (locations/dates/times/company name) in advance to the Parking and Timetabling offices, who will then advise Security / Parking Attendants of the activity. A permit will be left for collection by the removalist company at the Gatehouse
- Kelvin Grove campus - advise Timetabling who will advise Security / Parking Attendants. A parking permit will not be required.
Please note the following:
- The removal, relocation or disposal of furniture associated with a building project is separate to the above processes. Arrangements in these instances are coordinated by the Project Manager / Capital Works Section as an integral part of the project.
- The disposal of furniture is quite a separate process to the disposal of assets. Disposal of assets is handled within the cost centre according to Finance and Resource Planning policies, procedures and guidelines. Please refer to the Division of Finance and Resource Planning web site for information concerning the disposal of assets.
