This site details the management of the waste types generated at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Operating Procedures are in place for the individual waste types. See the navigation on the left of this screen.
Reduce
Avoid waste - look for ways of producing and using goods that stop waste being generated. Reduce waste - choose products that can be used productively, recycled in your area, and have minimal packaging.
Reuse
Re-use containers, packaging or waste products.
- Look for products in reusable, refillable or recyclable packaging when you shop.
- Enquire if goods can be repaired rather than replaced.
- Use rechargeable batteries rather than single-use batteries and ask how to dispose of batteries properly.
Recycle
The collection and often reprocessing of discarded materials for reuse. Recycled materials include those used in manufacturing processes and those used in consumer products. The recycled material is often degraded somewhat by use or processing and therefore must be converted to another purpose. For example, the processing of recycled newspaper and other paper wastes usually shortens their fibres, and the material cannot be used to make high-grade paper. Instead, it can be reprocessed to make cardboard or insulation. Recycling helps reduce pollution, prolong the usefulness of landfills, and conserve natural resources.
Disposal
Treat the waste to make it less hazardous or reduce the volume of the hazardous component. Dispose of the waste safely.
